The sound of catastrophe

When Onagawa, a town of 10,000 on Japan’s Northeast coast, was washed away by the Tsunami on March 11, 2011, a tenth of the population died and many more migrated shortly after. Yousuke Kajiya however, went against the grain. He abandoned his guitar store in Tokyo and resettled in the seemingly hopeless Onagawa to build and produce guitars made of wood, cobalt and carpentering techniques from the Tsunami-stricken areas. Motockney Nuquee and I share accounts of the small town’s passion for music through the eyes of Kajiya and Onagawa’s sound of catastrophe.
