Child labour is condemned throughout wealthy countries, but what if children need to work to provide for their families? Bolivia legalised child labour after a workers’ union consisting of children who fought for their rights. To find out about their concerns and vision of work without exploitation, I met several underage, but mature pioneers in the Bolivian city of Cochabamba with my colleagues Javier Sauras and Michele Bertelli. This feature later won an award from the children’s rights organisation, Plan, in Austria.
