Can one be sexy without legs? In her works, photo artist Mari Katayama gives an answer that goes beyond a simple “yes”? She deconstructs beauty ideals, reconstructs them again, shows how everyone tries to copy the norm, and asks what is left in the end. For a portrait of Mari Katayama, I travelled through the periphery of Japan, where a rising star of the art scene has already reached fame.

The shock of the nuclear meltdown in Fukushima in March 2011 was severe, and the attempts to restore normalcy have been similarly intense. Regardless of public opinion, the government rushed to let nuclear reactors restart so they would begin to generate energy again. The main argument being that Japan has no natural resources and therefore no choice. This analytical feature shows several alternatives. On an island affected by stormy seas, sweltering summers and lengthy experience with the world’s strongest geothermal activity, other energetic sources are easy to find.
